For years I comforted myself with the fact that my mother’s father died with a full head of hair at the age of 97, thus assuring that I’d stroll through life unbowed by the follicle challenges that had brought so many friends low. Today I’m not so sure. My hair’s been thinning out at an alarming rate in the last few years, and it’s within reason that I’m actually going to resemble my father (who’s as bald as Daddy Warbucks) before I start collecting social security. Should I have recognized that my father’s baldness was probably as strong an indicator of my future look as my grandfather’s? Sure. But I was in denial. And in that one regard I might share something in common with LeBron James, who (according to Bomani Jones of ESPN) wears a headband because he thinks it distracts from the fact that he’s losing his hair.
As Jones commented in this video on Around the Horn last week, it might be time for James to face facts and embrace his “inner George Jefferson.” In short, it’s to move on up to the bald side, LeBron. With any luck I won’t join you for 40 or so years.
